The Results of Our Social Mobility Survey Are In

November 19, 2022

At OPPI, we believe that everyone should have an equal opportunity to succeed, regardless of their background or socioeconomic status. That’s why we partnered with Access Singapore to run a survey on social mobility in Singapore. We polled 201 people on their perceptions of how social mobility interacts with institutions such as schools. The results are featured in the Straits Times on 19 November 2022.

Here are the results of our survey in brief:

About 72 per cent of respondents found that some sectors in Singapore are harder for individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds to get into than others, while 15 per cent disagreed. The remaining 13 per cent were undecided.

Only 55 per cent of the respondents feel that they are confident about achieving their career goals in Singapore.

While respondents feel that the Government should give equal opportunities regardless of which school or background the person comes from, 78 per cent of the respondents feel that attending a brand-name secondary school will influence the opportunities they have in life.

These results show that there is a perception among many Singaporeans that social mobility is not equal across different sectors and that some groups are at a disadvantage when it comes to opportunities for advancement. This is something that we at OPPI are committed to changing. We believe that everyone deserves an equal chance to succeed, no matter their background or socioeconomic status. We will continue to work with partners like Access Singapore to promote social mobility and ensure that everyone has an equal opportunity to reach their full potential.
